We have talked about the costume we were thinking about using for the music video. For the dancers that are going to be in the video, as said before we were thinking that they should wear outfits that are contrasting to whatever our Lady Gaga is wearing, we also kind of want the dancers to be wearing quite plain outfits so that they don't really distract the viewer's main focus on either Lady Gaga or whatever else is happening in the shot. Therefore I think that the best kind of costume for them to be wearing would be something along the lines of plain leggings, as they would also be good practically as they are stretchy and therefore would easy for the dancers to move around. I would also suggest that they probably wear just a plain t-shirt, it might actually be quite a nice idea to have them wearing possibly long sleeved t shirts so that it would then kind of look like they are wearing some kind of jumpsuit, which is probably a little more stylish and what Lady Gaga would have some of her dancers wearing.
We have also taken into consideration and thought about the costumes for our monsters that are going to appearing in the music video. The monsters that we have decided on using for our music video are Dracula/Nosferatu and also Wolfman. Now these costumes are going to be quite easy as they already have like a set image and I think that we should obviously stick to this image so that they can be slightly recognisable to the viewers of the music video. Therefore we are going to look into getting an iconic Dracula/Vampire costume for the Dracula monster, which will mainly consist of a black cape and then like a suit type piece of clothing underneath. We have also got some vampire teeth that we hope will work so that we can then stick them on the teeth of our actor so that when he does have the costume and the teeth on he will really look the part and then that character will be effective.
For the part of the Wolfman, we're hoping to get a simple wolf type costume. The costume ideas for this character was pretty simple. We are going to get a wolf costume and seeing how that looks and what comes with it, we were possibly thinking of having him also in pretty normal clothes like a shirt and some trousers. So he is still looking quite normal and then would possibly just have the/a wolf mask as well as like some wolf gloves/hands.
For our Lady Gaga character we have been trying to think of like costumes that would kind of fit n with our themes running through the music video, for example, like the old horror movie type characters with that kind of damsel in distress type feel/look that they have about them. We were also thinking that because it does have this old horror movie theme and feel running through it that her outfits could or should have quite a gothic feel and look about them. However we also know that whatever kind of think that we think would look good in the music video or go with some themes that we've got running through it we have to make sure that they have that Lady Gaga feel about theme and that they could pass for something that she might wear in one of her music videos. One thing that we know about the costume for Lady Gaga is that she will be wearing high heels throughout the music video as we know that Gaga is always seen in heels, even in her dance routines so we need to get them to practice dancing the routine for the video in a pair of high heeled shoes so that the footage and routine will look good when it comes to actually filming it.
For the male characters within our music video - Dracula and the Wolfman character, we have decided to use the same actor. We thought it would be kind of easy on the eyes and possibly quite effective to use the same actor as it could make it seem as though the characters (apart from the different costumes they will be wearing) are quite similar, which could in a way add to the story of the love triangle situation (because they are similar).
One of the main reasons though that we bought this actor in to play these parts is because he is the boyfriend of the actress playing Lady Gaga and therefore we thought if we had him playing the characters she has a love interest with (Dracula and Wolfman) then the chemistry between them should/would be good, and also real, therefore making it easier for our Lady Gaga actress and also making it more believable for when the audience/viewers are watching the music video.
One of the main things that I think that we need to take into consideration is the location. We have got a few ideas in mind that are actually quite close to the college itself and that are also relatively easy to get access to. Some of these place include: corridors and the a stairway in the college, also one of the car parks and greens/fields around the college, around the back of the college buildings, near Lewes train station) around the back and also the woods/foot trail at the bottom of the blue footbridge. We have been out on a couple of occasions with a cameras and gone to the locations we had in mind and took some photographs so that we have these to use later on in our project. The photographs can be seen below:
We mainly looked for and found a couple of open spaces so that we could have enough room to film and have the actors perform the things/pieces that we needed for our video. Also some of the above pictures show the locations in which we use totake our digipak and advert photographs, which we then found were difficult to do even just that in, therefore it would be highly difficult to even try filming anything there, which is why I think we didnt't use that as one of our actual filming locations.
Most of these photographs were taken just so that we had seen and looked at a wide variety of different places that we good possibly use for scenes within our music video, however most of these have been taken around the college, and when we went and walked around and had another look at them, we realised that it would be quite difficult to try and make sure that we didnt get any shots where you could see or tell that it was the college. Therefore there were only a couple of locations, that are in the photographs above that actually made it and were used in our music video. The locations that we did use, or tried to use were the staircase in the photos above, we picked this spot as we wanted to try and recreate the scene where you see Dracula walking up the stairs, however you can't really see him that well but he has a really pronounced shadow on the wall, and this staircase had a very small window near the top and we thought that this could be a good place to try and recreate that scene.
The other location that we used, that you can see in the above photographs is the woods, seen in picture number 7. We all really liked this place and we thought that it would be a really good place to do quite a bit of our filming, as it could be a versatile place to use and it would suit both of ou monsters, and it also fit the description and ideas of the place that we thought that our 'Gaga' could wake up in, when she is supposed to have woken up in this mysterious place, where the rest of the video takes place.
And those were the different locations that we looked at and that we used during our music video. We also used one of the actors and group members' house to shoot some of the other stuff, that really needed to be indoors, and this took place in Eastbourne, however we didn't get any photographs of this location as we didn't know that we were going to use it when we decided the locations that you can see and have been mentioned above.
Within our music video we haven't really got any major props that are necessary to the music video. One of the main props that we used within the music video was the mobile phone, as this would be, was vital so that we could film most of the speaking pieces within the song and so that we could show that our 'Lady Gaga' was having a conversation with another character, that may not be in the same shot.
We also had some other minor props within our music video. We originally used a book and a laptop that both were related to the film Dracula, so that you could tell what film we had incorporated into our music video, however we had redone the beginning of the music video, so this will be talked about more in the rejected footage blog. We then also had the album cover for The Fame Monster so that even before the song had started you could identify what song the music video is for, however this was also taken out of the video during the editing stage.
We also used a pepper, I think it was, for the part in the video where both the horror film characters (Wolfman and Dracula) are meant to be eating Lady Gaga's heart, which follows the lyrics of the song. They used this prop to bite into and then forcefully pull away, so that it looked quite aggressive. Other than those mentioned, we didn't really use many props, as it was mainly about the story going on between the characters in the music video.
In relation to the colour of the mise-en-scene, the main colour change that we are/were thinking of making most of or even all of our music video black and white. Also we might possibly put on some different effects so that we can make it look like an old movie, so that the filming we actually have can look even better and possibly make it more effective.
For the make-up for our characters we used quite dramatic looks as we needed to make sure that the characters that we had incorporated in our music video were quite easily recognised by the audience watching the music video.
For our Lady Gaga we wanted to have it kind of dramatic, like the way she would have her make-up in her music videos. However, we didn't want to take anything away from her character and also the story. Therefore it was quite simple yet also dramatic at the same time. We kept everything pretty much natural however, we had our Gaga were some bright red lipstick so that her lips stood out, therefore in the shots where she's talking (especially in the close ups of these shots) it looks quite effective, and also so that your eyes are quite drawn to the colour/the boldness of her lips.
We then also had her wear some false eyelashes, I think that she in fact wore a few layers of eyelashes to make them really stand out. These proved particularly effective when it came to shooting some shots of her eyes, especially close ups as they really made her eyes stand out and also gave her this glamorous look and feel.
For our Wolfman make-up, we found this quite difficult, we were originally going to try and get a costume, however we couldn't really find one good enough, and some of them were really expensive. Therefore we decided that we would try and make our own wolf so that we could start filming the scenes that he is in. We went for the option of using face paints, therefore his face was painted brown as the base and then when added a black nose also gave him some black around his eyes so that he had the darker feel to him and that he also ended up looking quite mysterious. We then decided to leave him in his normal clothing, and this worked out quite well for us, because in the lyrics of the song it does say that he is a wolf in disguise, therefore we decided to leave his costume alone, and keep the casual everyday clothes.
With the Dracula character, we were quite lucky and I think a friend of one of the group members actually had a Dracula costume and were willing to let us borrow it. So finding a costume for our Dracula character was relatively simple and easy. For the make-up of Dracula, we simply used the same face paints that we had created the Wolfman look with. This time for Dracula we started off with a white base for him face, and then we added some red on his lips and dragged it down a little so that it looked a bit like he had blood around and coming from his mouth. We also used the same technique of putting some of the black face paint around his eyes so that he had that more horror film feel and that more mysterious feel.
I think that because we have related, as much as we can, the mise-en-scene in our video, with Lady Gaga herself and her also her previous music videos I think that we have targeted the audience, as we have kind of stuck to and interpreted her sense of style within our music video. I also think that some of the pieces we have included whether it be by costumes or even dance routines and the love story that goes in the music video we have reflected the kind of pop genre of Lady Gaga's music quite well.
