Initial Ideas

This blog post is going to be all about the initial ideas that we thought of when it comes to making the music video. We got some of our main ideas from firstly looking at Lady Gaga's previous music videos. We had to look at and analyse acouple of her music videos for a previous blog post, therefore because we chose to analyse different music videos of hers, we then pulled together some of the points we gathered when watching the videos. This helped us get some ideas for the videos that would be different and original from her music videos but also have some aspects of it that would be similar to her others so that the video would be linkable to her others and so that it might look a little more like she or her record label had either made it or had some input in the making of the music video.

Another way that we got some of our initial ideas was from the actual lyrics of the song. They were actually quite narrative lyrics, and they kind of told a little story. This therefore helped us and gave us the idea that we could use the lyrics to narrate our video, which is also quite a good idea, I think, so that we don't kind of stray away from the meaning and subject of the song/lyrics.

One of the main concepts we had for our music video, was that we would make it look a little bit more like a short filmrather than a typical music video. Similar to her other music videos, such as 'Telephone' and also 'Paparazzi', therefore kind of linking all/most of her videos together. So from this idea we then thought of the effects we could put into our music video that would make it look more like a short film; the first thing that we thought of was the countdown that you normally see at the beginning of the older films, that usually count down from 10 to the start of the film, as seen in the photo below;
This would probably be how we started our music video, really giving it and the viewer that movie feel.

The next idea we got was actually from looking at her previous videos, specifically 'Telephone'. When I analysed this video I noticed that there was quite a bit of use of credits, at the beginning they showed the title of the video, and then who was going to be starring in the video etc. They then also had some credits at the end of the video, that roll up the screen just like they would do n an actual film. I then pitched this idea to the rest of my group when we first started talking about our ideas and making it look like a film. This then formed the idea that we could possibly use the countdown to start the video and then maybe we could put in the credits, giving the viewer some of the basic information about the video. Although I don't think, at this moment in time, whether we have fully decided if we are going to use the credits at the end.

The reason that we might not be using the credits at the end of the video is because we actually came up with another idea, which we all really liked the idea of, on how to finish our music video. We knew that we were most likely going to be starting our video with the film countdown, and then another film related idea was put forward, which I think came from when we were looking at some videos for inspiration on youtube, about a burning reel. We thought that instead of actually having a definite ending to the video we could have it so the film reel burns and corrupts the ending of the video, therefore leaving the ending to the viewers imagination. We think that we could pull this off as there is a burning film reel effect that we think we might be able to look at and use within our 'film' lessons.

The burning reel idea also came from the other ideas we had about incorporating actual monsters within the video, therefore looking at old horror movies. Then we looked at the lyrics again and although that throughout the song she says that the monster ate her heart, there isn't like a definite death or ending within the story that the lyrics tell us. Therefore letting us kind of decide what type of ending we want the video to have, we therefore thought that it would be a pretty good idea to have like a little cliffhanger, therefore resulting in us deciding that we were going to have the burning reel end the video.

So we then had to take into consideration what old movies we actually wanted to incorporate into our music video. We mainly researched these movies by looking a different movie posters and movies themselves on google, we also looked at some of the movies that we liked on youtube, therefore getting a bit of a better idea about the mise-en-scene and the way things were performed and done within that particular movie. So after this research we then, as a group, decided that we were going to use three different movies and therefore possibly three different monsters within our music video. The movies and monsters/characters that we are going to be using are: Frankenstein, Nosferatu and Wolfman. Along with this came the idea that we would have our 'Lady Gaga' playing the female character or the heroine within the different movie scene shots, for an example; Frankenstein's bride. We also thought that to enhance this we could possibly buy like the actual wigs, that you can get from like the halloween stuff, that fit the characters/the heroines in the movies. Below you can see what the bride actually looks like, and it seem that the main thing needed would be the wig and everything else should be relatively easy to find or even produce ourselves. Therefore I think that we should be able to make this idea happen.

Another point that we took into consideration was who else we were going to have in the video, because as you can see in many of Lady Gaga's video she puts on a big production and there is usually a dance routine within the video. This was definitely one thing that we wanted to incorporate into our video, as it is such a huge thing that can be related to Gaga and her videos, for instance everyone remembers that dance scene within the 'Telephone' video, in which Gaga and Beyonce are dressed as the superheroes. However when we thought of how we could put in our video, it was a little harder, because there is the possibility that most of our video may be in black and whit therefore having the kind of bold outfits wouldn't have much of an impact, and we also didn't want to take much of the attention from our Lady Gaga. We then came up with the idea that we could have the dancers in contrasting outfits to our Lady Gaga. We were also thinking of possibly having an odd number off dancers, possibly something like five dancers, so that then when they all danced together in shot, including Lady Gaga, there would be six people/dancers within the shot, which would also be easy on the eye, making it more pleasant to watch.

Another initial idea we had was to do with the locations that would be in our music video. There was one idea that we had, that we were all set on and that was in way recreating the clip (or at least the location and concept) within Nosferatu where you can see the character walking up the stairs, but with the main focus on their shadow that has been cast on the facing wall. This is shown in the image below:

We all thought that this would be a great shot to have in our music video as it is iconic but we could also kind of make it into our own, and I think that it will be great to have in our video. Therefore we knew that for one of our locations we would need some kind of dark stairway that we could use in order to create this kind of thing. Also for some of Dracula shots it might be a good idea to shoot some at night so we have that dark background that could make it really effective.

We also had some simpler location ideas forming. For example we thought of things like, using the castle that is near us, possibly even some of the corridors and rooms within the college. We also thought about some of the locations, like the greens, car parks or even the wood trail that are situated near and around the college. Also we thought of having our Lady Gaga in dark and quite gothic clothing that could then go with the horror theme of our music video.Which can be found in our mise-en-scene blog.

And these were/are our initial ideas for our 'Monster' music video.
