Exploring Music Videos.

This blog is going to be about/include the analysis of four different music videos. I am going to write a brief description about each of the music videos that I have chosen and I am also going to put a link, from youtube, to the actual music video.

The First music video that I will be exploring is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. This video has ben considered the first ever music video because the producers used video instead of using film to make the video. The original purpose of this video was for it to be played on Top Of The Pops, when the band couldn't actually perform the song live, due to the fact that the song was just too complicated to perform. One of the main things to say about the music video, when exploring or analysing it is that it is quite a simple video that used little effects. For this video the band simply wanted to bring their album cover to life.

The genre of this video, it can be said is operatic rock, mainly because that was the genre of the actual song, and also Queen themselves, were a rock band, so I think that it would definitely be categorised under the rock genre. In this video the band communicate with the audience as they are looking down the camera and performing the lyrics to song, which is otherwise known as simply performing to the camera.

There is also an element towards the end of the video where they are performing the song on stage at a concert to an audience.

And the most obvious element that is used in this music video, even though they are only used a small amount, is the special effects,
this is maybe one of the most memorable things about music video. Along with the composition/positioning of the band members, which is similar to the album cover.

And here is the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ

The second music video that I looked at was Get Your Freak On by Missy Elliott. One of the first things you notice about this video when watching is that they have taken photographs of moves within the dance and put two/three of them together to make that part of the dance move again. Using the still photographs to make shots of the dance throughout the video.

The next thing I noticed about this video, which relates to the last point is that all the way through this video there is a choreographed dance, and a group of dancers performing this, along the artist doing either her own dance moves or possibly using a move from the choreographed piece. The dancing in the video then can be related to how the video communicates a meaning towards the audience.

The title of the song is Get Your Freak On, which could be like related to dancing and to get dancing, therefore meaning the dancing relates to the song and that also the dance performed is how the video communicates, to the audience, the meaning of the song. Also during the dance and video special effects can be seen, for example Missy Elliott's head and neck expand as if elasticated and come right out toward the screen.

Also throughout the video the artist and also other artists that appear in the video will look into the camera either dancing or kind of lip sync/say the lyrics of the song, directly addressing the audience.

The genre of this song and music video I would say would be kind of dance/hip hop, and I think its audience may be people who would listen to that genre of music and also people that may like to dance or relate to the song, so I think that this and also the video before it (Queen) would have quite a wide audience.

The next video that I looked was Stan by Eminem featuring Dido. This video gives you like a look into the characters and their kind of story, through the scene that takes place, before the song actually starts. One of the first main elements of a music video that we see is a special effect, we see the character Stanley dying his hair, and the blonde suddenly covers over his hair, whilst he's looking in the mirror, which then later on relates to the rest of the video and the song.

Then the song starts to come into the video, and we understand that the genre of it is rap/hip hop, which may then bring in the audience of rap and hip hop fans, that may be young adults, the older teenagers. When the lyrics of the song come in, we see that the characters of the video are narrating the song, the girlfriend will sing the lyrics of Dido and obviously Stan will rap Eminem's part, which is the letters that the fan writes to the artist.

However later on in the video the artist then starts to write a letter back to his fan, to which the artist, Eminem, actually appears in the video and his saying his own lyrics to add to the story.

It can be said that the story of the video or what it represents is the obsession between fan and icon. As in the video we see a fan of Eminem writing to him and how much he is a fan due to all the pictures on the wall. However as the video progresses it shows the extremeness of his dedication towards the artist, and how this affects his life and the consequences of his actions.

We can also see how this affects the artists when he receives the news and also how feels about the situation when the camera does a kind of close up on his expression.

The last video that I looked at was All The Small Things by Blink 182. With this video as soon as it starts the song straight away comes in, unlike the previous video. The genre of this, I would say is a pop rock video/sing, and I think that the audience would be mainly teenagers, yet still having quite a wide audience. This video is quite a short video, and I don't think, again unlike the previous video, that the song narrates the video.

However with this video it is a parody of like pop videos and pop artists and boy bands, and I think that this could be like showing/representing that they are or are going to be different from these types of artists, because they are poking fun at them and also their videos. The artists and their videos, that can be seen in the Blink 182 video are Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera (Genie In A Bottle) and the iconic Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way.

They have used like special effects to come into the video going from a blurred screen to focusing in on the band members recreating the boy band getting off of the plane. They also cut away to different shots within the video using that same type of effect, when like zooming in on the singers face and also when they go back into the other video shots ( the parody parts).

They also again are looking straight down the camera as if they are just like performing the song to you when watching the video. And it also shows the band having a live set where they are performing the song on a stage kind of area with an audience.

That was my analysis of the four different music videos that I looked at / explored.
